Groups

For non-members the list below shows the range of groups we offer, whether there are vacancies in a group and where and when they meet and you can find out more about the group by clicking on the Group Name. The list doesn't provide you with contact details for the group leader for Data Protection reasons, so if you want to contact the group leader to make further enquiries and possibly join the group, contact Interest Group enquiries or use the other links on our Contact page and they will put you in touch. If you are interested in joining, see our Membership page on how you can do this.

Members can browse through the Group lists below in various ways to choose a group, find out where and when they meet and check whether they have vacancies. Click on the Group Name for further information about their activities.

Some groups are actively seeking new members and these are advertised on the Opportunities in Groups page.

Groups meet in homes, public venues, hired venues or outdoors. Members are free to join as many groups as they wish at no extra charge, apart from paying a contribution to the cost of room hire for those meeting in hired venues. The Group Leader will tell you if that applies.

Contact the Group Leader to make further enquiries or ask to join the group. You can find their contact details on the Members Portal through the Beacon system.

How much previous knowledge is required? Groups offer the opportunity to acquire new knowledge or learn new skills and not all groups require you to be an expert to join. Members learn from each other at their own pace. The group leader will be able to explain how much previous knowledge or expertise is needed to derive full benefit from a group.

There are further opportunities in the South Birmingham Network (SBN) if you cannot find the group you are interested in on our own Groups List. Our u3a is a member of the SBN along with Kings Norton u3a and Harborne & Edgbaston u3a. The network allows members in one SBN u3a to join groups in the other SBN u3as if they have advertised vacancies. See the Network page to find out how you can take advantage of this. Details of groups in the other two u3as can be found on their respective websites at - https://kingsnorton.u3asite.uk/ and https://hande.u3asite.uk.

If the group you are interested in is full or you would like to start a new group on a subject not already covered, our Interest Group Coordinator would be pleased to assist, offer advice to get the group going and handle any questions. We are always looking for opportunities to form new groups on new subjects or to split existing well-subscribed groups into two. Being a Group Leader does not require subject expertise; it is not an onerous task and can be extremely rewarding!

Interest Group Coordinators Liz Rasheed and Ros Napier are planning to offer support in September to potential and current GLs in managing groups. This may be of interest to people unsure about taking on the Group Leader role, or setting up a new group. If you are interested please contact Liz or Ros on Interest Group enquiries

The Useful Information for Group Leaders page here includes a Starter Pack, Risk Assessment forms, Venue costs and other helpful forms to download.
