Assemble at reception shortly before 14:00 . I expect we need to enter as a group in order to get the concession price so anticipate anyone late may need to pay higher price for entry. More than half the group fancy an outing to Birmingham Botanical Gardens, though not unanimous, so confirmation and a brief introduction to this project -
If there is anyone who is not familiar with the Gardens it was Incorporated in 1829 and is described as: Botanic Garden / Arboretum + Children’s Garden + Historic Landscape
It faces 21st century challenges of decline and decay, cultural changes and the huge impact of environmental & climate changes. So, your initial thoughts may have been of flowers, shrubs, trees and a few nice old buildings but …..I am hoping for different observations from you.
Look on the web site and you will see pretty pictures of every description so there will be nothing very original in you making more pretty record pictures. You might be thinking of capturing the beauty in flowers, or trees or the landscape or the sky but think, what is beauty ? I have just read a Charlie Waite newsletter and he points out no-one has ever seen a horse in a field gazing in awe at a beautiful sunset ! Is beauty only a thing for humans ?
This project challenge is asking you to ignore the obvious, to observe the light (dry or wet / bright or dull) and exercise your imagination to make one or two pictures that tell something of a story to you and maybe also to another person. Possibly more thinking, looking and talking photography than shooting ?
The project is intended to provoke a different approach, not lots of casual snapping (as if anyone has ever done that ? ) and a picture of a sign informing that a two hundred year old tree is in difficulty would certainly not meet the brief !
I would like to find out what you wish to achieve from membership of the group so I will be willing to sit on the terrace and have a chat if anyone wishes to do that.
