Welcome to Moseley & Kings Heath u3a
in south Birmingham
Moseley and Kings Heath district is a vibrant and lively area of Birmingham with a distinctive history and culture, noted for its Victorian arts and crafts style houses. Sarehole Mill, a working water mill, is a survivor of many such mills on the River Cole formerly used for manufacturing. Nearby Moseley Bog, once a secondary millpond for the mill, is now a nature reserve with ancient woodland and Bronze Age burnt mounds. It was a childhood playground for J.R.R. Tolkien who lived close by and inspired the wild forests in his books. Joseph Chamberlain, the visionary Lord Mayor and MP, who lived at Highbury, transformed Birmingham with its own water supply and gas works. Kings Heath House was once the family home of John Cartland, the ancestor of the novelist Barbara Cartland and the surrounding Park has been used as the setting for BBC TV gardening programmes. The art nouveau Hare and Hounds pub in Kings Heath is a popular live music venue and the Ritz Ballroom, formerly next door, hosted many famous 60s bands (including the Beatles) who are commemorated on its Walk of Fame.
What is the u3a?
The u3a enables retired and semi-retired people to come together and learn together, not for qualifications but for its own reward - the sheer joy of discovery! Members share their skills and life experiences - the learners teach and the teachers learn, and there is no distinction between them. Many of our groups require no prior knowledge or expertise.
About Moseley Kings Heath & District u3a
We are a large u3a founded in 2014 with over 500 members and more than 50 different interest groups covering a wide range of subjects and activities. We organise monthly talks on a variety of interesting topics. Our monthly meetings and groups are all free to members except when groups meet in chargeable venues, where the hire costs are shared between the groups and the u3a. Our membership subscription is kept as low as possible but set at a level which enables us to subsidise these costs.
